Mengmeng Luo (b. 1999, Changsha, China) is a London-based artist working across experimental cinema, expanded moving image and installation. She graduated from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London.

In Luo’s practice, the specialized division of labor within the film industry is not a mechanical assembly line, but the structural backbone of artistic production. Operating as a director at the center, she collaborates deeply with technical specialists across architecture, sound, and other disciplines. Far from a mere technical assembly, this multidisciplinary coordination unfolds through on-site staging, shifting perspectives, and spatial construction—forging cinema into an intensive collective framework that allows audiovisual syntax to extend naturally into the physical environment.

Her projects cut directly into specific historical fractures, media events, social behaviors, and institutional frameworks. She dissects how information is filtered, arranged, and codified within specific structures, thereby disciplining collective experience and shaping the public perception of reality. Luo reconstructs these archival fragments into fictional narratives. Fiction functions here not as an escape or imitation of reality, but as a precise situational apparatus—through dramatic tension and temporal displacement, the systemic inertia and tacit rules settled beneath everyday order are brought into focus through its fractures.

Luo’s practice continues to explore how the organizational structures of cinema can extend beyond the screen and operate across different spatial contexts. She translates the internal logic of montage into physical curatorial pathways, strips away screens in vacant cinema halls to reset the viewing relations among spectators, and introduces large-scale projections into the flowing physical spaces and currents of the city. For her, the moving image is not merely a tool for recording reality, but a framework for organizing time, space, and relations—evolving into a more complex mode of production and creation through which reality can be re-experienced, negotiated, and understood.

Her film Glitch in the Matrix received the Award at the Athens International Film & Art Festival and was exhibited at the 4th ReA Art Fair in Milano. She also published her first artist's book, Immobile Deterritorialisation, in collaboration with Snap Collective.

在她的实践中，电影工业高度分工的生产流程并非机械的流水线，而是艺术生产的组织骨架。她以导演为核心，深度联动建筑、声音等不同学科的专业技术力量。这种跨工种的协作超越了单纯的技术拼凑，而是在现场调度、视角交锋与空间构建中展开，将电影锻造为一套高强度的集体生产机制，使视听语言得以自然延展至物理场域。

她的项目直接切入具体的历史断层、媒介事件、社会行为与制度结构。她深入剖析信息如何在特定结构中被筛选、编排与固化，进而规训集体经验并塑形人群的现实感知。她将这些现实材料与历史切片重构为虚构叙事。虚构在此并非对现实的逃逸或模仿，而是一种精确的情境装置——在戏剧张力与时空错位中，那些沉淀于日常秩序底层的系统惯性与默许规则，得以在裂隙中被重新辨认。

她的实践持续探索电影的组织结构如何超越银幕，并在不同的空间语境中运作。她将电影内部的蒙太奇逻辑转译为展览空间的物理动线，在空置的影院中剥除银幕以重置观众彼此之间的观看关系，或是将大尺度投影置入城市流动的物理空间与日常人流之中。对她而言，动态影像不仅是记录现实的工具，更是一套组织时间、空间与关系的框架，并由此演进为一种更为复杂的生产与创造机制；现实也藉此得以被重新体验、协商与理解。

她的影像《Glitch in the Matrix》在雅典国际电影艺术节上获奖，并在 2023 年米兰 Rea艺术博览会上展出。2024年，她入围了第 18 届威尼斯拉古纳艺术奖。她还与Snap Collective合作出版了她的第一本艺术家书《Immobile Deterritorialisation》。
