Luo Mengmeng

Momo

MLuo Mengmeng (Momo) is a Chinese visual artist born in 1999 in Changsha, Hunan Province, and currently based in London. She graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design.

Her work spans a variety of media, including film, sculpture, and architecture, constructing narratives across multiple temporalities. Momo specializes in creating cinematic sequences based on spatial scenarios, which, when combined, form a continuous narrative that transcends time with surreal overtones. Drawing on her past experience as a journalist and film director, much of her work explores the interplay of societal beliefs and behaviors in the context of media messaging, responding to collective memory and creativity that emerge during extraordinary epochal shifts.

Her independently directed film, ‘Glitch in the Matrix’, was selected for the International Film lift sessions and won an award at the 2022 Athens International Film and Arts Festival in Greece. The work was exhibited at the Rea Art Fair in Milan, Italy, in 2023 and was also selected for the finalist 18th Arte Laguna Prize exhibition in Venice, Italy, in 2024.

In 2024, she participated in the residency program at Xu Liaoyuan MOMA in Chengdu, China, where she collaborated with others to create the architectural sculpture ‘Moment’. This work focuses on environmental narrative and spatial montage. In September of the same year, she published her first artist book 'Immobile Deterritorialisation' with Snap Collective.

BIO

Artist Statement

In her early film and video works, Mengmeng  Luo often drew narrative structures from stage plays, using fixed scenes and non-temporal images to connect them. Influenced by early 20th-century dramatic cinema, she incorporated elements typical of commercial films into her storytelling, experimenting with editing techniques and conveying the themes of experimental cinema in a commercial film style.

Through this process, she began to recognize the limitations of the film screen. The two-dimensionality of the screen, combined with the exhibition space, creates a confined space for conveying information. While in the UK, she conducted numerous experiments in the realm of images and space, creating three-dimensional symbols that transcend the traditional screen. One example of this is her work in Chelsea degree show featuring images projected onto a moving advertising truck (everything except of dogs).

Her current work focuses on the integration of multiple disciplines, including architecture, installation, sculpture, and video. She invites the audience to experience sudden insights, emotional revelations, and profound reflections through fragmented or seemingly meaningless images and scattered media. These experiences cannot easily be summarized or expressed, but are intended to stimulate understanding and response through a process of "communication," gradually forming a unique and personal experience for each viewer.
